How exactly does a gps work?
Now I know that gps stands for global positioning system and that it works by sattelites in space pinpointing your location by the transfer of some sort of signal. But I was wondering how exactly does a gps work. I mean if you think about it millions of people own a gps, whether it be for commercial use, cars, cell phones, military use, construction, airplanes ships or whatever most use a gps of some sort. How many sattelites are in space to accomodatea gps. All of the animations that I see of a gps are a picture of the earth and three sattelites that are revolving around the earth shoot out like laser beams and pinpoint your location. I know that the laser beams are probably for show but are there millions of sattelites in space for every gps. If there are much less than how would so few sattelites be able to pinpoint so many different locations.
To get a 3 dimensional fix on your location you need four satellites. Normally you would think you only need three but the fourth satellite is used to correct for the speed of the radio waves through the atmosphere. Each satellite sends a time encoded signal that the GPS receives and based on the time information of all of the satellites it determines where it is located. Imagine two circles drawn on a paper so that there is some overlap. The possible solutions are at each of the intersections. By adding a third circle if everything was perfect it would also intersect with one of the two previous points and that would be your location. However, since nothing is perfect each of those points has some error associated with it and the third circle doesn't actually intersect one of the two points but instead now defines an area in which the receiver must be located. By adding a fourth reading the area gets significantly smaller.
In order to provide coverage throughout the world there are 24 satellites. With a few spares if necessary.
The satellites send out radio waves and not laser beams and it is actually the receiver that calculates your location and no the satellites.

Why does today's generation suck so much?
Everything today is terrible: music, cartoons, movies, and definitely KIDS!!! For Christ's sake, cartoons can't even have guns in them unless they're some type of laser crap! And the music, ohhh the music! I haven't heard a good guitar solo or drum fill in forever. It's just a bunch of kids with no talents pumping out trash that everyone eats up! Today's TV isn't any better. The remade shows like Transformers and TMNT are atrocious. The original cartoons were AWESOME! Old school shows like Doug, Street Sharks, Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy were the greatest things to ever happen to animation. Today we have crap like Johnny Test, Bakugan, and Total Drama Island, are you serious? I'll buy my kids the old school box sets and let them grow up with the good stuff, lol.
....well what can you expect. The level of originality is definately decreased because we've seen it all and made it all. Originality is rare nowadays. Now the kids, we've just been been teaching them that more adult things are ok at a younger age. Maybe not so outright, but I've watched some kids programs that rapped and got pretty close to cursing and was shocked. Morality and the sense of right and wrong is a problem since the level of fear and respect goes right out the door with kids. They know they have the law and they flaunt it right in your face knowing you can't do anything to them besides a detention....if they decide to go.
You understand the need for a blog writer to come up with recurring themes for the sake of providing content. I've made one entry so far on a similar topic here. Of course, I'm not as concerned in being factual.I lived in Stone Mountain for 8 years. You could see the granite from our front yard. I think minority visitors are quickly tipped off to the park's past by the Confederacy-favoring laser show and its crowd.
I like geeky DIY projects as much as anyone else does. I especially like them when the builder takes something cool from a video game and brings it into the real world. If you are a fan of Portal, you will recognize this DIY project right away as one of the turrets from the game. This cool project has a geek building a life-size version of that turret and equipping it with motion detection and a laser eye.
