Blue Galaxy Red
What does it mean when a galaxy is red- shifted or blue- shifted?
Astronomy book and notes are doing no such help for me!
Red shifted means it is moving away from us. Blue shifted is moving towards us.
The classic example is of the sound a speeding train makes as it is moving towards you. I get higher and higher in pitch. Once it has passed you, the wound becomes lower in pitch. It a compression/elongation of the sound waves thing.
The same thing happens to light as it is coming towards you or going away. Except it's measured in the spectrum range instead of pitch.

Galaxies, red shift HELP?
can some explain to me red and blue shift using language a 15 year old will understand. I am so confused and have a big test next week so any answer will be great.
When a motorbike speeds towards you and then speeds away from you, you can hear the difference in pitch. This is because sound travels in wave form and as the bike is approaching you, the sound waves are compressed in front of the bike. You can tell the bike is coming towards you just by listening to the pitch. Now when the bike is speeding away, the sound waves are no longer compressed, they are actually stretched out and immedially the pitch changes.
It is same with light. Light also travels in wave form. When an object is travelling towards us, the light waves are compressed ahead of it. This produces a so-called blue shift in the wavelength of the light. When it travels away from us, it is red shifted.
