my seagate free agent 500 GB external hard drive is not being recongnized by my vista machine.?
i plug my seagate into the usb port on my machine and a bubble pops up in the bottom right hand corner stating that my usb device has malfuntioned and cannot reconize it. i then took it to a friends house and tried it on his xp machine and it appeared to work fine. does it have something to do with the software that is already installed on it for setup config. and can i delete that if possible and just have my full 500 gb instead of 465 gb. thank you
it doesnt appear so i cant format to my knowledge and how do i know if it is being powered by the usb? i have it plugged into the wall. and i have tested the port it works okay
Vista is more particular about some drives and might need to reformat them. I might also try other drives in the USB port--it might not be working correctly. Make sure the external drive is NOT being powered by the USB port.
