First On-Location/Studio Shoot, What Type of Lighting Do I Need?

I was asked to photograph some kiddos at a church and while I have done many shoots with natural light, I have not done any sort of studio work. I plan on purchasing a basic/portable backdrop kit but am totally lost when it comes to lighting. I have no idea what the area looks like, how much natural light there will be, etc.

Would continuous lighting be best for working with kids? Should I take a workshop on lighting before the shoot (it's not until July)? The photos will be used to make a calendar.

I work with a Canon 50D with 50mm 1.4f and 28-105mm lenses. All suggestions welcome.

Thanks!!

This is probably not the best time to go out and buy lighting without having a few months experience shooting under artificial lighting conditions.

Since you are experiences shooting outdoors, find a nice shady spot and photograph them. The shade will prevent squinting and will reduce harsh shadows when subjects are photographed in direct sun.

Remember to set your white balance to shade to remove the blue cast if not corrected in camera

Depending upon how many children there are, you may find that the 50 mm lens is far too long to take group shots and even the 28-105 mm could be a bit long.

When I shoot groups I use a 12-24 mm and stand back about 30 feet. This reduces some of the distortion caused when using such a wide lens and at the same times allows me to get the whole group leaving margins on both sides to account for the cropping necessary to turn a 3:2 image ration in to an 8x 10 inch print

If the surface they are standing upon is flat, you will find using a ladder will give you enough elevation to assure each child's face can be seen. The more children, the more shots you will have to take to assure all of them are looking at the camera and do not have their eyes closed ... among other considerations.

Link to lighting you may want to study before you start spending hundreds of dollars on lighting equipment.

There Are Many Types Of Dollhouse Kits

When it comes to the topic of dollhouses, there are several ways to enjoy the hobby. You can build your own houses out of scratch, buy a ready-made house, or buy a kit and assemble it yourself. There are several types of kits on the market to choose from. Most of the kits are made out of wood or plastic and different types of dollhouse themes are offered such as Adirondack cabins, Victorian, Georgian, Tudor, modern, country churches and general stores.

Most people prefer to do a bit of building on their own and that is why miniature dollhouse kits are very popular around the world right now. A lot of the kits come with accessories such as porches and stairways. Most kits also come with miniature furniture and people. It could also contain miniature electrical supplies, lighting, pots and pans, and fruits and vegetables.

There are basically two types of dollhouse kits available on the market, those for children and those for adults. If you are buying for children make sure the kit is strong and durable. They should also be bright and colourful and come with rooms that can be opened so they can play in them. Wooden kits are generally more durable and can be repaired more easily if needed. They are also typically less expensive than plastic kits.

While the kits are suitable for adults of all ages as well as older children, very young children should be kept away from them as the dollhouse miniatures can be dangerous, especially if swallowed. You can keep youngsters out of the houses by getting a kit that closes the house completely. You can also place a piece of wood or Plexiglas at the back of the house to seal it.

If you are looking to buy a kit, a good idea would be to search for wooden dollhouses that are constructed with cabinet-grade plywood as exterior walls. Look for quality as well as price as you want the house to last for many years to come. You should also consider the size of the dollhouse and where you want to display it. Make sure the house will fit the space provided. You will have a choice in this matter as dollhouse kits are available in a variety of scales (sizes). Once you have assembled the kit you can set about decorating the dollhouse with items such as wallpaper, lighting, and flooring. You can then furnish it with beds, tables, couches, chairs, dressers and drawers, etc.

You will find there are a lot of internet retail sites that deal in the hobby of dollhouses. Many of these will sell a variety of kits. Some of the most popular brands include Greenleaf, and Corona Concepts. The prices may vary quite a bit, but most sites also offer to ship the items to buyers anywhere in the world. This method of buying will allow you to compare the prices and choose the best deal. You will also be able to find kits on collectibles and auction sites such as eBay. It is not too hard to find the type of kit you are seeking if you type in what you are looking for in a search engine. If you do order a dollhouse kit online, make sure that you insure it from loss and damage during shipping.
