Beat the Booklet Blues
Not as big as catalogs but larger than leaflets, booklet printing falls somewhere in between. This little fact can cause big problems. Catalogs offer a great deal of room for descriptions and entire lines of products. Leaflets are compact by design and are designed to catch attention. So how do you get the creativity flowing with a booklet?
Like all things that require both creative and administrative talent, there are a few steps you can take to stoke the creative fires while also ensuring you are staying on task. Booklets are well worth the effort in spite of the unique challenges they present. So, keep these tips in mind and you too can beat the booklet blues:
• Know their needs – what are your customers looking for when they reach for your booklet? Are your customers 75+ year old golfers or are they 12 year old teenie boppers? Knowing your customer base will help you narrow your choices.
• Capture with color – take advantage of the booklet format and use lots of color, budget permitting, of course. Booklets give you the opportunity to combine the best of leaflet design and catalog design. This means that a combination of pictures, captions, and copy are all fair game.
• Less is more – because you are somewhat limited with a booklet, use the space carefully. You do not have the luxury of running and rambling product descriptions as you would with a catalog. On the flip side of that is the reality that you can integrate content you could not fit onto a leaflet.
• Build the brand – make sure to emphasize your brand in the booklet. Catalogs do not require brand building as much because of the sheer volume of pages. Leaflets have to overemphasize the brand. A booklet is where the happy medium can exist.
So, the glass is really half full when you use a booklet! There are a lot of options available to you, so do not get bogged down. Hit your customers with what they want, give them lots of color, keep it simple, and make sure to use the booklet to reinforce your brand.
