Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising - Official Fog of War Trailer
The Crash Landing Of Tenerife March 27, 1977
Tenerife is a paradisiac small island of L archipelago of the Canaries. However, on March 27, 1977, it was the theatre of the most fatal plane crash of L history, when two Boeing 747 were struck on the track of L airport of Los Rodeos. 583 people were killed.
The Canary islands form an archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean, in front of the coast of Africa, between 27° and 29° of northern latitude and between 13° and 18° of western longitude. They are volcanic islands. Tenerife is in the center of the archipelago and measurement 81 km length on 45 km broad.
That made 8 hours that Boeing 747-121 of the flight charter PanAm 1736 took off Los Angeles. 396 people are on board (including 16 members D crew). The commander is of bad mood. He cannot join his destination of Las Palmas: two hours earlier, a bomb exploded in L air terminal, and the installations are closed time to give them in state. The air-traffic controllers then ask the 747 to divert themselves towards Tenerife, hardly with 70 kilometers of Las Palmas. The commander and the passengers accept this decision after a fashion: in any event, they N do not have the choice.
With 14:15 GMT, the flight PanAm 1736 presents itself finally for track 30 of L airport of Los Rodeos (Tenerife). L landing occurs without problem, but the commander notices L obstruction unusual which reigns on the carparks. A multitude D planes arrived following the temporary closing of Las Palmas. A Boeing 747-206B of the KLM company is also present. The small airport of Tenerife is saturated.
The tower requires of the 747 of PanAm D to go to park itself in fourth position behind the 747 of KLM. This jumbo is also a flight charter (flight KLM 4805). It arrived 45 minutes ago, with 248 people on board (including 14 members D crew) and the commander of L apparatus S impatient. D as much more than the very strict Dutch legislation L does not authorize to exceed a quota D hours for him and its crew. S it waits too a long time, the situation will become difficult for him and KLM.
To 14:30 GMT, the good news arrives finally: the tower of Tenerife announces with all the planes on the ground that L airport of Las Palmas has just reopened. The tower informs that to accelerate his takeoff, the commander of the 747 of PanAm will have to roll just behind the 747 of KLM. It accepts.
But another problem is added: an intense fog has invades L airport. The visibility is reduced to a few hundreds by meters. With 16:51, the 747 of KLM obtains L authorization of startup of its engines. With 16:52, the 747 of PanAm requires in its turn L authorization D to ignite the engines. The answer of the tower is immediate:
16:52 (Turn of Tenerife) - PanAM 1736, you are authorized to start. Recall when you are ready for rolling. For your information, it will be necessary for you to go up the track behind L other 747 and to leave the track by the third taxiway on your left.
The two planes thus will go up at low speed the track of 3400 meters. The 747 of KLM must go jusqu at the end of the track, make half-turn and take off, after having obtained L agreement of the tower. The 747 of PanAm will have to leave the track to the third taxiway to let take off its Dutch counterpart. Not average to make differently with the disorder which reigns of L airport.
With 16:55, the 747 of KLM starts to S to engage on the track to go up it. The 747 American follows it. The fog seems S to be still intensified: the two 747 cannot S see, not more than the tower does not see them. The visibility fell to less than 200 meters.
17: 01: 57 (PanAm Copilot) Tenerife, here Clipper 1736.
17: 02: 01 (Turn of Tenerife) Clipper 1736, Tenerife.
17: 02: 03 (PanAm Copilot) did Heu, one say to us to contact you to go up the track, C is D agreement?
17: 02: 08 (Turn of Tenerife) Affirmatif. Penetrate on the track and leave by the taxiway number 3. Third on your left.
17: 02: 16 (PanAm Copilot) Troisième on the left, D agreement.
Many unwanted noise in the tower make comprehension difficult.
17: 02: 18 (Flight engineer) did It say the third?
17: 02: 19 (Commander) Three?
17: 02: 21 (Turn of Tenerife) ième on your left.
17: 02: 22 (Commander) I think qu it said the first.
17: 02: 26 (Copilot) I go him redemander.
17: 02: 32 (Copilot) On the left.
17: 02: 33 (Commander) I ask for myself S they will have the minima to take off.
17: 02: 39 (Commander) is qu this qu it S really passed aujourd over there today?
17: 02: 41 (Employee of PanAm) They put a bomb in the terminal, Mister. Exactly with L place where there are the counters D recording.
17: 02: 46 (Commander) Eh well! It was asked to them whether one could make waiting in flight and they N did not want. You know qu they asked for D to us to land here.
Now, the tower S addresses to the 747 of KLM.
17: 02: 50 (Turn of Tenerife to the 747 of KLM) KLM 4805 Heu how much taxiway did you pass?
17: 02: 55 (KLM 4805) I think that we have just passed Charlie 4 (the fourth strap) now.
17: 02: 59 (Turn of Tenerife) OK, when you arrive at the end of the track, made half-turn and recall me when you are ready for clearance.
The two planes continue to go up the runway. But the 747 of PanAm is lost in the fog. It is very difficult to distinguish the straps from exit. The tower with however confirming that the 747 will have to leave the track to the third strap.
17: 03: 48 (Turn of Tenerife) Euh. 1736, recall by leaving the track to me.
17: 04: 59 (Turn of Tenerife) KLM 4805 and PanAm 1736, for your information, the luminous beaconing in the center of the track is except service.
Here is an additional difficulty. D as much more than L crew of the 747 of PanAm exceeds the third strap without seeing it. They identified the first well, N did not see the second, and now qu they arrive at the third, they believe to spend the second. The 747 thus moves towards the fourth strap.
At the same time, 747 Dutch finishes his increase of track and carries out his half-turn. The fog is dissipated slightly and the visibility goes back to 700 meters. The commander of the 747 of KLM does not want to miss this chance.
17: 05: 45 (Copilot with the tower) KLM euh 4805 One is ready with takeoff and one awaits our clearance.
17: 05: 53 (Turn of Tenerife) KLM 4805, you are authorized towards the Papa beacon. Go up towards level 90 and maitenez. Turn on the right after takeoff and proceed to the course 040 jusqu with L interception from radial the 325 of the VOR of Las Palmas.
17: 06: 09 (KLM Copilot) received, KLM 4805, we are authorized towards Papa on level 90, turn on the right after takeoff jusqu to intercept radial the 325 of the VOR of Las Palmas. And we are now (ready with takeoff??)
L plane received clearance, but that does not mean qu it has L authorization to take off. Despite everything, the commander, very much in a hurry to set out again, starts to increase power. He quite simply forgot qu another plane was still on the track. The stress of the situation is there undoubtedly for much.
17: 06: 13 (Commander): One goes there!
17: 06: 19 (Turn of Tenerife): OK
But at the same time, the pilot of PanAm speaks on the frequency.
17: 06: 09 (PanAm Copilot): Not eh…
The controller, doubtful, wants to prevent of 747 Dutch from taking off
17: 06: 20 (Turn of Tenerife): Wait for takeoff. I recall you.
17: 06: 20 (PanAm Copilot): Eh We are still on the track going up, Clipper 1736
But the last two speakers spoke at the same time on the frequency. Blow, the two messages are transformed into a long whistle. The 747 of KLM takes speed. 1500 meters in front of him, the 747 of PanAm is always on the track.
17: 06: 25 (Turn of Tenerife to the 747 of PanAm) - Roger Dad Alpha 1736, recall when the track will be released
17: 06: 29 (PanAm Copilot) - Receipt, one will once point out the released track
17: 06: 30 (Turn of Tenerife) - Thank you
The commander of the 747 of KLM does not react. Perhaps it understood that the 747 of PanAm had just released the track.
17: 06: 32 (KLM Copilot) is C released in front?
17: 06: 34 (Commander KLM) is qu what you say?
17: 06: 35 (KLM Copilot) is qu it released PanAm well?
17: 06: 36 (Ordering very aggravated) Oh yes!
At this moment, the 747 of PanAm arrives at the fourth strap. Suddenly, C is L horror. 700 meters further, the luminous glares of the headlights of 747 tear the fog.
17: 06: 41 (Commander PanAm) (Cries) here it is the look at to it This this wire of p *** arrives
17: 06: 41 (PanAm Copilot) - (Cries)
L crew of PanAm puts full throttle to release as soon as possible on the taxiway. But C is too late. At this moment, the commander of 747 Dutch sees the 747 American across the track.
17: 06: 47 (commander KLM) Oh shit
747 Dutch is launched to more than 270 km/h. the commander draws the handle at bottom while hoping to be able to take off and pass to the top of L other 747. The nose rises, the tail touches the ground letting spout out a long sheaf D sparks, L apparatus S raises D one meter, but this N is not enough.
The two giants of 350 tons strike themselves. The twin wheel before train D landing strikes the right side of the 747 of PanAm, tearing the fuselage. L left wing cuts the drift to the short-nap cloth of the rudder. The passengers of the 747 American see the partitions S opening around D them, the ceiling to disappear, the floor S to break down. The tanks of L right wing are torn and carburizing it S ignites.
The 747 of KLM S raises slightly before falling down completely dislocated on the track. There N will be no survivor in L plane.
In the 747 of PanAm, some people manage with S to escape from the extreme carcass. 64 people (of which the commander and all those which was in the cockpit) on 396 will survive. L fire is terrible. Heat is such as the fog disappears in a ray D one kilometer around the disaster.
On the whole, the catastrophe will make 583 victims. There will be only 64 survivors.
