VGA and DVI monitor to tower help please.?
I recently bought a BRAND NEW UltraSharp 1908FP 19-inch Flat Panel Monitor, off of a buddy of mine who knows nothing about monitors of computers, just a friendly sale it was.
well with it came
-the monitor and stand
-the white DVI cable
-the blue VGA cable
and thats it. I already have a power cord for it.
I tried hooking it up with the VGA cable alone because my tower does not have a DVI connection port, but the monitor didn't turn on. The power was on because the green light was blinking, but the screen remained black.
Do I NEED a DVI to VGA converter??
or is there ANY other method of fixing this and making my monitor work.
I have an emachines PC with windows XP if relevant.
So help please???
DVI to VGA converter would be irrelevant because you can't make an analog (VGA) into a digital signal (DVI) with a converter. In reality you can't go VGA to DVI-D at all (VGA to DVI-I yes but all monitors with DVI connection are DVI-D)
From the information and assuming the monitor is working and the Tower has no issue with the graphic card (or intergrated).
1) Check to see if your monitor has an auto-detect button which checks the monitor to look for signal from the DVI and VGA signal (one after another). If your monitor is on DVI signal and you plug in your VGA connection, the monitor will not turn on
Note, all Dell UltraSharp monitors have a auto-detect (on the bottom right corner of the monitor, the far left button that has an arrow going into a square resembling a monitor). You press it once, it does auto-detect, press again, it should be either digital (DVI) or analog (VGA), and press the button again, it would be the other signal (VGA or DVI if it came up DVI or VGA first respectively)
2) If that does not work, try another computer if possible or shutdown the PC, connect the monitor, and turn the PC on. Sometimes, the graphic card needs a reboot to send signal to the monior (seen it when you switch graphic cards but ths is unlikely the case here)
3) If it is all working, replace the cables and try it again (VGA cables could go bad)
If all this does not work, it could be a graphic card or monitor issue (that is why check with another PC if possible with the monitor)
