Best Neo-Disco Artists/Bands To Get Your Butt off the Bar Stools Pt. 1
Remember when people said disco was dead? Well, it’s not. Disco is back, but in a new form thanks to a number of electronic bands that have been influenced of course by the driving rhythm of classic-era disco but also the sounds of new wave and modern R&B. Here is a list of some of the hottest and most influential neo disco artists/bands that are sure to get your butts off those bar stools and onto the dance floor.
The Juan Maclean
Formed by the guitarist for LCD Soundsystem and Six Finger Satellite, The Juan Maclean is the project of John MacLean and largely features singer and keyboardist Nancy Whang. The band’s critically acclaimed debut “Less Than Human” gained comparisons to LCD Soundsystem but was noted for its heavier electronic and processed sound. The band would continue and release their sophomore album “The Future Will Come” in 2009 to slightly disappointed reviews who felt it did not compare to their debut. The lead track, though, “Happy House” is seen as one of the band’s best songs and one of the best neo disco songs of the decade, with the song bouncing effortlessly on a disco synth groove for nearly 13 minutes.
CFCF
Michael Silver is the young mastermind behind the disco pop stylings of CFCF. Who else but the Montreal native could turn Fleetwood Mac’s song “Big Love” into a disco dance anthem? CFCF is definitely a child of the digital age, soaking up the sounds of Italian Disco, 80s new wave and top 40 hip hop. If you’re looking for examples of the new breed of neo disco that LCD Soundsystem has bred, CFCF is the perfect example. He got his start in a remix contest for the band Crystal Castles that he won beating out thousands of other entries which is testament to his talent and his rep. If you are ever in the Montreal area you can find Silver DJ’ing at the Dance Dance Dance club where he is a resident on the weekly Saturday night.
