Closer To Majesty And Psalm 93
Psalm 93 reads as follows from the New Oxford Annotated version of the Bible:
“The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty:
The Lord is robed; he is girded in strength,
He has established the world, it shall never be moved,
Your throne is established of old;
You are from everlasting.
The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
The floods have lifted up their voice,
The floods lift up their roaring,
More majestic than the thunders of the mighty waters,
More majestic that the waves of the sea,
Majestic on high is the Lord,
Your decrees are very sure,
Holiness befits your house,
O Lord, forevermore.
A central theme of this psalm is the sureness of the presence of the Lord, contrasting to the churning seas and all else that carries with it the breadth of uncertainty that is rather inescapable. There is no way to escape the uncertainty of our condition and striving in any known direction will not get us far from the place we are in, utterly dependent on our next breadth for life.
We are uncertain even of the truest qualities of God because the limits of our minds can only comprehend so far. In our uncertain approach to the Lord, there is enough available information to concur with the words of this psalm, that the Lord is robed with majesty, something we can discern through the awesome sights of nature itself and the created world, on the earth but also looking to the sky and the stars in deep space.
We can adorn ourselves with what we feel is a little bit more, a little bit more success, a little bit more knowledge and we can call ourselves smarter and better but we can never truly put on the robe of majesty. But that will never circle past a limited forum as the truth is, the majestic is found in the presence of the Lord and relates to the presence or absence of the Lord and whatever we define as success or whatever we are striving to do, the only route to the majestic is in seeking the personal presence of the Lord. The true robe of majesty is found only with the Lord.
This psalm is talking about the majesty of the Lord, in some realms it is considered distant and unseen. But the difference here is that majesty is coming closer to us here in this psalm. There Lord is seemingly so far away, but is actually so close that the waters of the roaring seas in this psalm lift up their voice to him.
And this closeness pertains to us then, as those who seek the Lord in prayer maybe while standing or walking right beside these majestic seas. To stand by the waters of the great sea and then actually see the waves rise to swirling giant sizes, which is a sight to behold but is it also something that is quite nearby and while seen from the safety of the sandy shore, it is close enough to where if the sea usurps its boundaries and overflows towards you or if you might even feel the spray of the mighty seas even while standing in the posh sunshine by the sandy shorelines. The majesty of the seas is not only seen but they might also be felt. And maybe in similar ways our spirits can be brushed by the seas of the Lord’s majesty.
As this psalm signifies, the Lord’s majesty is much more than this, and goes beyond this in ways we cannot fully grasp.
Yet despite our limitations, we can say that these waters are mighty and majestic in and off themselves, and even if in the moment if we cannot contemplate further majesty, we have the majesty of the seas staring us in the face and its majesty is evidence of the existence of majesty.
The Lord’s might can manifest to us as individuals directly and specifically through nature. We can see utterly amazing sights in the sky and one of these sights can be directed to us personally and individually as the Lord’s designs in nature can be personalized in a moment to one person. There could be a sudden change in the winds, a sudden appearance of sights in the skies and as natures spot is aimed even for one individual.
Behind this manifestation on the physical plane, is the majesty of the Lord coming to us. The Lord is so close to an individual that he designs a special sky right into the presence of that person in communicating to her but also revealing majesty within the communication. This majesty comes as close as the breeze of the cool winds brushing against her face.
This can be the source of elation, but as the psalm says, there is much more and that of course includes the eternal as well, as this psalm states that the Lord’s throne is established from everlasting and will never be moved and the majesty of the Lord mentioned in this psalm moves into an invitation to the eternal. And we do know that as far as finding things that will never be moved, there are lots of places lots of people are searching that just isn’t going to have any real unmovable quality. Most of what people try so hard for often has that elusive quality of moving in and then moving away like the passing clouds. That diamond in the rough, even if found, will also fade in those sandy shores of the passing seas.
.
These sights or wonders, which come so close, are also befitting, as the final verse says, holiness befits your house.
This might not be holiness in the traditional idea of piety although it can include this, but more that it is a sanctioning from the Lord and this is a befitting gift for this individual as from the hand of the Lord and his majesty. We may have to think widely as to what this might be, as it is not preconfigured to everything from the traditional thought processes and even as nature itself reveals incredible diversity, the Lord’s gifts can be incredibly diverse as well as the Lord does what he pleases.
If you do see for example incredible sights in nature, for example in the sky, you may have an inner witness that the Lord is speaking to you personally. Besides the closeness of this revealing, that the Lord is communicating exactly this way to you, that the Lord is choosing this form of communication is also something that is revealing of what is befitting for you and mirrors to you a holiness that is spoken of in this psalm. If he speaks to you in a mighty vision of the sky, it is with an understanding that you can relate to this and its meaning and this momentary vision is befitting.
In the Lord’s thoughts, the very design of this communication was made in this fashion and this is something that isn’t to be swept under the rug but thought upon and meditated upon as to it’s particular meaning and why the Lord has chosen to communicate to you in this fashion as he designed this for you personally.
It is good to be humble in prayer, but we have to take our thinking far as prayer goes because that is where the Lord is, the might, the majesty and we need to be open to the majestic communication not only expecting the mundane or what we had been familiar with previously based on what we did know. But a lot is contained in what we didn’t know. . Indeed, we must take our thinking much further that we have previously in our prayers as prayer needs to go to more not less, that is more majesty and more majestic.
.
.
But to get to where we want to go in prayer, we do need to remember we are seeking the Lord and his majesty and we may have to go further that we have previously in our prayer visions to find this out. And yet that majesty may not be far, it might be so close that we can feel it, but first off to recognize it we must realize what we are looking for something that is majestic.. You don’t look for the sights of the majestic seas deep inland and we may have to venture out from our deep inland thinking to find the majestic seas of our Lord. Out thinking may have to mount the wings of an eagle and soar higher than we have before.
As far as the seas itself in this psalm, the majestic seas recognized their own personal might and personal greatness, yet from there they could realize that the Lord was more and the voices of the seas themselves cried out to the Lord, whom they knew was more majestic and also also close enough to hear them. This psalm also shows that even the mighty seas realize that the Lord is close enough to call out to, and lift their voices to, and that the incredible reach of the Lord comes their way. The metaphor is that even if you find yourself a bit robbed in some way with majesty, there is the voice from there that you are given to reach to the Lord.
However great we think we might be, whatever our achievement could be, the Lord is always going to be more. We can never get into a position on anything we can put a handle on, whatever it is, without saying that the Lord is more. Whatever we could know, think, do or obtain, the Lord is always going to be more. The seas in this moment might have been at their most majestic in history, but they could stop, lift their voices to the Lord in a moment indicative of closeness and realize in their own majestic moment, that the Lord was more and always will be.
The critical point of this psalm is voice. The voice of prayer is how we lift ourselves into the majestic presence of the Lord and this can also be an interior voice of the spirit as well as the spoken word.
But it is not only the case of humble verses proud, this psalm is clearing indicating that we shall ask not for less in prayer, but for more. Verse 4 of this psalm mentions more twice, and if you don’t know what you’re doing with your prayers, always goes to the side of asking for more, as this psalm says. If someone feels they aren’t getting their prayers answered, go to asking for more rather than less. The clear indication of this psalm is that prayer means going to more, asking for more, seeking more.
And this is actually being humble in a way because it is recognizing that the majesty of the Lord as being what it is, which is more, as the majestic seas in this psalm recognized the truth that the Lord was more as they lifted up their voices to him. Asking for more doesn’t compromise closeness to the Lord, as the seas lifted their voices to more in the closeness to the Lord even though they already had a great deal of their own majesty. Majesty seen, felt and heard doesn’t compromise closeness to the Lord therefore there is no reason to fear it as it arises from the unmovable source.
And people can realize that one of the things the Lord has given them is a little bit of their own personal majesty and yes, you can look at it, that is your own majesty, but realize it’s source and even this majesty must heed the call to more.
