word problem?
A surveyor visiting the Himilayan mountains is calculating the hieght of Mt. Makalu using a level. Her level sits on a tripod that is 5 feet tall, and is placed 40 feet from the base of a 35-foot tree. Assuming the tripod is level with the base of the mountain and the level shows that the top of the mountain is lined up with the top of the tree, how high is the mountain if she is 7 miles from its base. (1 mile= 5280 ft. )
the answer choices are: a) 27, 725 ft b) 28, 452 ft c) 28, 684 ft. d) 30,200 ft e) 36, 960 ft

(there was a drawing here, it looked a bit like a triangle...but alas, it is not previewing well. Think of a triangle with the tripod as the left point, the mountain as the right hand side, and the tree in between.
Label the parts...tree is 35 ft tall and 40 ft away from tripod. Mountain is 7 miles away from tripod. mountain side is side x, which you need to find.
not to scale, I know...but it might help you visualize the problem. You just have to find the sides of the triangle. Imagine a line going from the top of the tripod to the top of the mountain. That's the hypoteneus. Do the multiplication to get all the units the same (7x5280) for the bottom of the triangle. First, figure out the length of the hypoteneus using the tripod, tree, and 40ft base. Then you can find the angle for tripod/ground and use that to find the length of the hypoteneus for the whole thing. Then, you find the length of the mountain side. Just remember to add 5 feet, because you're point of reference is the 5 foot high tripod.
