What's a good printer for graphic design?
I work for an advertising specialties company and we are looking at buying a new central printer for our graphics department. It won't be used for everything, but more for just printing proofs that need to be nearly spot on regarding color matching to my monitor and what the final product will appear as when sent off to our printing vendors. I know it can't be EXACTLY like the finished product, but it needs to be close.
I think my boss would prefer keeping it under $500. I think it would probably be beneficial to have one that can print at 11x17 as well. He assumed we should get a laser printer, but I didn't know if inkjet or laser would be better though. We deal with pantone colors a lot, in addition to full color stuff. Any suggestions?

If you really want color matching, you'll want the printer with the most colors. Basic ones only have 3 colors plus black. Epson has some with 5 colors plus black and they even have the R800, R1800 and the like with 6 colors and 2 different blacks. You might want to look into those.
I get compatible Epson cartridges cheap at http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp but I cant promise it's exact color matching. To my eye it looks good even for photos but maybe to a real exacting pro it wouldn't.

Ricoh Aficio SP C210

Starting prices of this laser printer model are from 350 dollars and the maximum price is at 1068 dollars. The printer is able to print black and white images with a rapid pace while color images are comparable in terms of speed with some of the best in the market today. The only drawbacks in this color laser printer would probably be in its bulky size and large weight. The significant advantage of the Ricoh Aficio SP C210 is in its ability to handle large paper capacities. One drawback is in its driver which does not automatically detect the optimal color mode.
