What is the red giant of the galaxy?

There are lots of red giants in the galaxy.
The sun will become a red giant in about 7 billion years.
They are relatively common in the galaxy!

Using Hubbles Law and the current estimate of Hubbles constant about how far away is this galaxy?

Suppose the red shift of a galaxy indicates that the galaxy is moving away from us at 295 Kilometers per second.

http://astrosun2.astro.cornell.edu/academics/courses//astro201/hubbles_law.htm shows the equation, and Hubble's constant Ho:
"Current estimates of the value of this proportion, known as Hubble's constant, put its value at approximately 71 kilometers per second per megaparsec"

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Hubble's+law

"A megaparsec is given by 1 Mpc = 3 x 106 light-years."

When dealing with objects within our galaxy, redshift and blueshift aren’t that useful of an indicator, since everything is orbiting at varying velocities. For really close stars, we do use parallax, as shavera mentioned. For further away stuff, we take a look at the properties of the star in question. If you plot a star’s colour (or actually temperature) versus its luminosity, you get what is known as the [Hertzsprung–Russell You will see that for most stars, there is a very nice correlation between colour and luminosity. From there, we can calculate how for the star needs to be for us to perceive it as however bright it is.
