Gear Make

Can I make a turn on my 3rd or 4th gear?
I drive a manual car. And when I make turns, i put go down to second then make the turn. But today, i tried doing it in third. The car ran more smoothly, and i wondered if i cant always make turns in 3rd gear. and what about 4th? wouldnt that give better gas milage anyways?
It doesn't matter if you don't downshift while talking the corner, what matters is how hard you accelerate in the given gear. If you accelerate slowly, then you can get away with it. If you accelerate faster, you will wear out various engine and transmission components faster. The reason being that the pressure in the combustion chamber, and torque on the engine and transmission input is higher.
Similarly, if you downshift too far and rev the engine up anywhere near the redline, you will accelerate engine wear. My rule of thumb for a 6k rpm redline is that if the rpm reach 3k rpm or higher, you shouldn't have done that. High rpm will put high forces on the reciprocating parts of the engine.
