High Tripod Lighting

Mid End-Mini DV Camcorders *eye twitch*?
I'm searching for a MiniDV Camcorder with high zoom (25-30+) for use at the upcoming Drift Finals in California, transfer to computer is a requirement for the camera, preferably non IEE1394 (FireWire). I hate Macs... >.o
Can't afford the nicer Higher End cameras that I've been drooling over, but I don't want the low-end crap that I've seen. I would like to use the camera for amatuer film making as well. Low light a plus!
Image Stabilization? Don't really care for still shots, I can use programs for that...
Please help!!
I'll be saving approximately $500 for everything *camera+tripod and other accessories* but I can save more if required, I have about 2 months before the drift event! *Oct. 14th* but would like to decide around Oct. 1st to allow delivery? If bought online.
And, I'll still be searching around the web for some too...thanks!
Get a good used Sony DCR-TRV520 Digital8 camcorder through eBay for about $250-300. It has a 25X zoom, optical image stabilization (superior to digital methods), and good color reproduction. It also has external mic and headphone jacks.
Firewire/IEEE-1394 also generically called DV port or i.LINK by Sony works with both Macs and PC's and is the best way to transfer digital video.

Low light indoor photography, nightclub/party etc.!!!?
I need to take some photos at a DJ gig next week and I've only ever done studio lit portraiture so I'm a bit nervous as I really want them to turn out well.
It will be very dim lighting and I don't want to use a flash cos that's tacky so I was thinking high ISO and slow shutter speeds, but I'm worried about 'noise' and keeping the camera steady without a tripod (it's also likely I'll have had a few beers...)
Here are some examples of what it should be like: http://www.thecobrasnake.com/partyphotos/blastramp/index.html
http://www.boundarysounds.com/partypics/19-06-09
I especially like the second shots because they seem well lit, how would they have done that???
ANY HELP/TIPS APPRECIATED THANK YOU SO MUCH.
With event photography like this, you WILL need to use a flash unit. It's not tacky if you know how to use it properly, with a flash bracket and/or a good diffuser.
The examples you linked to were all done with the flash on.
If you have Canon equipment, I recommend the 580EX II flash. If you have Nikon, I recommend either the SB-800 or SB-900 flash. If you have some other brand, I recommend getting Canon or Nikon.
With either of those flashes, you can keep the camera on Manual mode, set the shutter speed to stop or show motion as you see fit, set the aperture to increase or decrease depth of field as you see fit, and the flash will provide the correct amount of light for proper exposure (most of the time). If you've got a place with a white or at least lighter ceiling, you can bounce the light and get a more even, natural look while keeping the proper exposure.
I recommend using some sort of flash bracket (FlashFrame and StroboFrame are good brands) along with a Sto-Fen diffuser.
