Laser Diode Module How will a 100 mW red laser diode module unit that requires "250mA at 3V" work with les than 3V of power?
I am looking to make a red burning laser and want to use rechargable batteries. the laser requires "around 250mA at 3V". What would be my best battery choice. 2 AAA non rechargable, 2 AAA rechargible NiMH batteries, or a single 2V battery? If you can help out with this, thanks.
ps the link to the ebay diode and unit that I would use is (http://cgi.ebay.com/HIGH-POWER-RED-BURNING-LASER-DIODE-100-mW-MODULE-UNIT_W0QQitemZ300253036772QQihZ020QQcategoryZ4661QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting)
I meant "single 3 volt" battery
voltage is not power.
Actually, it requires 3 volts plus at least 2 volts for a 8 ohm resistor.
so you need a 5 or 6 volt battery. You may get by with 4.5 volts, and a 6 ohm resistor, but you would run less risk of burning out the laser diode with 6 volts and a 12 ohm resistor.
Very important: Even a reflection from this laser can cause permanent eye damage. That means if the beam hits a shiny piece of metal and reflects out the window and hits a passerby in the eye, they can be blinded. Or you can be blinded.
When these are used in industry they are in a controlled room with no windows, and you are only allowed in if you are wearing the correct protective goggles.

DIY: How to build a laser diode driver
In the U.S any laser 5 mW is illegal what if i just buy a diode module are thoes illegal?
I'm not sure about laser with more that 5 mW being illegal. You can buy lasers that are more powerful than that at websites like wickedlasers. They have them up to 500 mW, though they are expensive.
more like i dont know the difference between a enter key and a space bar(thats worse right?)
i just made a 2nd “burner” pointer from a dead hp drive
and actually most “laser” diodes arnt true lasers, just super contaminated leds(spellcheck, i just left it as is)
but anyway, a “250mW+ 405nm Blue Violet Laser Diode Module with Adjustable Glass Lens, Tiny Heatsink for Laser module and 9 Component Driver DIY Kit with Glass lens” runs for $65 on ebay where as a raw 200 mw diode is like $15
far cheaper than a “as is” blu ray burner that may be a burnt out diode to begin with
