Middle class uses torches, since they use a little material and thought, but nothing too much. Rich uses deathstone, since it takes a lot to get there. Once you are there though, you can use them and save your wood/coal for other projects (like getting material for tracks). Rich get richer. Other light source of note: redstone torch. Used by mad scientists and 8bit computer programmers.
