Getting Eco-Friendly with the Samsung Blue Earth
There are solar powered gadgets out there ever since it became feasible to harness the power of the sun. With global warming compelling nations to bring down carbon emissions and conserve on dwindling fuels, the impetus to harness alternative energy sources has never been more compelling. The greatest benefit can be had addressing the green initiative on the road, office and at homes. It’s not surprising that the diminutive mobile phones are getting into the act, no matter how small the contribution is.
Enter the green mobile phone – the Samsung Blue Earth. First seen at the Mobile World Congress early this year, the new handset almost got buried by a slew of high end mobile phones until now, when the Korean mobile phone giant officially announced its released in time for the upcoming Holidays. No pricing information yet, but this should be forthcoming very soon. As eco-friendly as it is, expect this to be less wallet friendly as it sports high features for a mobile phone.
Earth-Friendly features
The technical details we have to date reveal that the Blue Earth does harness direct sunlight as an alternative power source. But this just augments the usual electrically powered charger which is 5-star rated for energy efficiency. The charger consumes only 0.03 watts of power when on standby which is what it may end up most of the time if you use its solar charging capability more often.
The solar cells at the back cover can deliver 4 hours of talk time after about 14 hours of solar charging under the sun. Not exactly useful at night or in the wintry month in the north, but for most people, they can banish low battery warnings forever if they stay long enough under the sun when making or taking a call.
But Samsung is quite emphatic in claiming that the Blue Earth has been eco-friendly right from the design all the way to packaging. It uses fuel-efficient production processes with the least amount of CO2 emission. The materials used are recycled plastic water bottles without the harmful substances like BFR (Brominated Flame Retardants) or PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) commonly found in them. And as it exits the factory, the Blue Earth gets packaged on recycled paper for its box and manuals that use soy-based ink in the printing.
Phone Features
Being green beside, let’s not forget that the Samsung Blue Earth is still a mobile phone in the monoblock touchscreen form that will be judged based on its features. Here, it doesn’t disappoint.
It’s got the essentials right like 3G/ HSDPA/HSUPA for avid internet surfers, a 3” WVGA capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors, an accelerometer, a 3.2 megapixel LED flash camera with geo-tagging and face recognition, VGA recording at 15 fps, a GPS receiver microSD support for up to 16GB, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi 802.11b/g and stereo FM radio with RDS. It’s quite clear Samsung hasn’t compromised the phone to deliver an eco-friendly one.
Availability?
Samsung says the Blue Earth will hit the market in November and will be priced in the €300 SIM-free range. Internet sources say it has been released in Sweden mid-October and should sweep the continent before the year ends.
