Light dmx Control
And the DJ Said..........let there be light and there wasn't?
I work as a mobile DJ and use my colleague's lighting rig which operates on the DMX system, 512 probably. 6 lights are are operated by a control box, but we have a complete tool who uses this also and for some odd reason keeps changing the addresses of the lights. It is most annoying, especially when one needs to slow them down for say, a first dance at a wedding. I have not been trained in this field as yet and I need a run down as to what I have to do to check that they're aligned correctly in case this idot has been at them again.

Is It Possible to control Non-DMX lights with a Dmx Controller?
DMX lighting is expensive, but i still want the computer based control of it. Any help with a lighting system would be appreciated.
I am guessing that when you say "DMX lighting" you are referring to the moving head/fancy gobos etc which, as you point out, is indeed expensive. Theoretically speaking DMX is just the way lights are controlled using a 5pin XLR connector (otherwise known as DMX). Pretty much all lighting controllers and/or dimmer racks nowadays are DMX controlled as it is recognized as the industry standard.
You can control generic (non-moving head) lanterns with a DMX controller. There are many boards that offer control for both moving head and generic (profiles, fresnels etc) lanterns, some for one or the other as well.
I would recommend (from experience) that if you want to just control generic lighting then an ETC Smartfade would be a good idea as it is completely computer controlled with a theatre stack, sequences and all the good stuff. However, it isn't cheap, a 12/24 version will set you back about £1000. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative you can't go far wrong with a strand 100/200 series.
Just make sure you do as much research as possible before buying any type of controller, hope this helps.

post any questions you have on DMX, i can probably answer them…
quick primer tho, DMX is a control signal typically used in stage lighting. it consists of a repeated burst of data, in packets of 512 bytes(referred to as channels). depending on the address of your device and how many channels it uses, the values are interpreted and correspond to some abritrary device function.
as seen in the video, the dimmer pack allows you to choose a start address (set to 1) and each pair of plugs is then addressed 1 thru 4. now any controller you use that outputs DMX will be able to tell that dimmer pack to adjust the voltage being sent to each circuit by changing the DMX channels 1 thru 4 (0 to FF or 0 to 255). an incandescent light bulb plugged into a circuit could then be dimmed on the fly. this is just one example of DMX controlling a device.
for actual technical signal information, i know arduino has a DMX library that explains a bit of that. I also used to know of a good site that had a lot of technical writeups on DMX, but i cannot find it now.
