Light Lighting Controller interfacing project: how do we make a traffic light controller?
hey guys, we're having a bit of problem here with our project. we're asked to make a miniature road intersection controlled by miniature traffic lights. the traffic lights should be automated and controlled by a program. how do we do that? can anyone tell us where can we find a complete procedure on how to do that?? please help us
First you need to determine what the traffic light has to do. How many bulbs? What kind of timing? What exactly does the computer control do - make it stay longer/skip to next or what? Keeping the functions and options simple is key to minimizing cost and effort to implement.
The easiest way is to use a little bit of electronic logic with a few switches.
Next is using electronic logic to time lights, with a little bit of intervention from the computer, using the parallel port.
Next is driving the LED's by the computer, either directly or with buffer, again, via the parallel port. This is a printer port that was on older computers - you should be able to find one somewhere. If not, you can add a parallel port card to a regular PC.
Now, manually changing the output is not hard, but doing it via a program is more difficult.
My recommendation would be to just make a little timer circuit with minimal features. If this is not acceptable, investigate the parallel port on the internet. See what programs they use to drive it, and how this can be done. Without software, not possible to do much. Then, look at making the traffic light control logic.

One Red Ring means there is a general hardware problem. Check all your cables and be sure they're plugged in tightly.
