Pro Owner "supersatin" hamster owner needs pro advice please. Breeders/vets plz read.?
I have a "supersatin" hamster, between 17-25 days of age. Tiny, only furred on the face, only guard hairs on the body. Mostly hairless. Eats well, drinks a little goat milk. Was underweight and has gained MUCH weight in the 4 days I've had it. Pee/poo regular. Drinks. Very active and acts healthy, but looks like Smeegol/Golem, lol. It was grooming and licking it's own butt today, and it started crying as it was grooming! There is no sign of wet tail, injury, irritation or anything wrong with the butt, aside from baldness! It stopped as soon as I came over and hasn't done it since.
Also:Cage is great, all basic needs MORE than covered! I did not breed two satins. I don't breed. Got him from the backroom of pet shop. Some dumb customers brought it. Mother killed all other young. Just wanted to give it 2nd chance at life. So I guess to sum up: Why was he growling at his butt? What age will he become full grown? He's so tiny!
The Syrian Satin Gene (Sa) does not create any physical defect, and there are no known health issues associated with the Satin gene. So no idea why he should be crying licking at his butt.
A Syrian hamster which gets a double dose of the Satin gene will have a coat which is generally just considered very unattractive. He should be o.k. now at that age; they can theoretically come away from the mum at 18 day’s without any problem. Maybe just a bit under developed.
