Taking a picture with the Nikon D3000 10 points for best answer?
I'm going to be taking pictures for my newspaper at the school talent show tomorrow. No flash photography, but I think i'll be able to get close to the stage. It will be normal stage lights. What settings should I set my Nikon D3000 for?
Step by step please:)
You will need to spot meter, probably on the performers' faces. Impossible to tell you what the settings will be because we don't know how much light you will have. Take a few test shots and narrow down your range. I would start with ISO 400 and increase speed if needed. Noise is better than blur. I let the shadows go dark without worrying about it. Performance photography is often high contrast lighting. Capture the faces without blowing too many highlights and you should be fine.
Last weekend I shot a symphony concert and was able to go with ISO 800, 1/60 @ f/6.3 for a great deal of the performance. But at the last talent show on stage (actually a womanless beauty pagent) I had a range of shutter speeds, apertures and ISO, depending on the activity happening. You will be able to shoot most singing and interview etc slower than dancing or juggling. So plan to adjust as necessary.

What was making it at this point, one of those really bright white stage light thingies? I forget what they’re called. I just know from Squarepusher shows they are expensive and can discourage people on acid from being up front.
