How important is it to have experience in areas of theater other then acting?
For example, stage crew, sound design, light design, board operations, stage management. Will experience in all these areas give me an advantage in searching for a job?
If your trying to get a job in acting those other things REALLY dont matter...they want you experienced in the area your trying to get a job for.

What Goes Into Building Sound Stages
Most people simply turn on their TV sets, watch their shows and are completely oblivious to what a sound stage is. Of course, everyone knows what a stage is but most people couldn't tell you what differentiates a sound stage from any other type of stage.
Quite simply, a sound stage is a movie or TV show set that is constructed to block out any other sounds other than those that are going to be recorded in the shoot. This may sound simple on the surface but in fact it is a craft that must be studied and learned.
It is the production designers job to draw up the original plans for a sound stage and then the carpenters who are employed to work on the set will build it. It not only must be sturdy and functional but it also must adequately accommodate all the particulars that will go into each scene that is shot in the movie or TV show.
For instance, the lighting technicians will have to have the means and accommodations to set up their lighting. Also, the set decorators must at the same time be able to do their jobs accordingly as well. Also, gaffers and camera technicians are also going to have to be able to do what they are required to do on a sound stage.
One thing is for certain and that is that any changes in a finished sound stage can delay production, so everything must be done correctly the first time. So, you see there really is more to it then meets the eye when it comes to designing and building sound stages.
This is precisely why all successful designers of sound stages have completed some type of formal studies at a film production design school or academy. Trying to make a living as a sound stage or production designer without a formal education is pretty much a waste of time because you will be competing with those who have.
