Are US television programs reflective of the state of mind of the average American citizen?
My logic--and correct me if I'm wrong--is that the media caters to the wants of the market and not the other way around so what we see on (US) TV is what most Americans want, right?
And, if most of the programs are trashy, meaningless, impulsively devised snippets produced by ADD producers FOR us because we want it that way, is the media produced for us a good measure of our general state of mind?
Nope, most TV programming is decided by a 60-something executive based on random (and incomplete) partial surveys with too few and rather pointed questions (which do not really address the full effect of the TV show being studied) asked to a very narrow sample population (of a highly specific demographic). I have participated in such studies. The producers inquire only about the elements of the shows that they deem important and are unconcerned about the elements of a show that I as a viewer deem important. The artist also puts pressure on the producers to be allowed to put his own personal spin (sometimes perversity) on the show's production, and there is the persistent struggle between the artist doing what the studio wants (or requires) and what the artist wants to do. All these variables result in the TV show having no actual connection to its audience.
For example, there is the 2009 Dodge Challenger (which looks much like the 1970 model), the 2008 Ford Mustang (which looks surprising unlike the 1970 Boss 302 model) and the soon-to-be abandoned 2010 Chevy Camaro (which looks much like the 1969 model.) If such designs are so eternal and persistently desirable, why were we made to wait over thirty years to see them put back on the market again. If I wanted a car that looks like that now, didn't I want one for the past thirty years? And why should I buy a brand new car when I have had thirty years to buy a used one? Clearly, the people who drive the market think that it is far more important that I spend money buying a new car than that I get the car that I want and be able to replace it with a brand new one just like it when it wears out. Apparently, the market thinks that I do not want the same thing all the time. Unfortunately, when I want something and have not been able to buy it within a year, I still want that thing, but after that year, it will have to be a used one. Right?
Therefore, the market is not catering to my needs. So, to come back to your question, the market provides whatever its research has proven will be successful, and since they only asked me once (over ten years ago (and the shows that I said I like never got on the air), then they are not asking me what I want--they are telling me what I will get based on what other people want.
It's about the dichotomy of how populism represents the majority while pretending to represent the masses.

Psychological Egoism as a Logical Conclusion
From here, I will sketch my own ideas about psychological egoism before going to the of Feinberg’s objections.
Psychological egoism merely says that we, as human beings, always do what is initially better for us. Actually, it means that we never act the way out of our best interest or what we are convinced to be so. The most controversial item of defending psychological egoism is the following: even though people can find pleasing to do what they do, can we state that these people are motivated only by the pleasure they get doing what they do?
Nothingstanding to the complaint that psychological egoists are able to make any fact fit their theory, I am sure that the theory of psychological egoism itself can be proven in practice. And the proof is hidden in the single question, "Why?"
Take any action which one can dare to call altruistic, i.e. it turns up that the action in question is being done out of any motivation, and this is already another story. Now, why do you think the person did take that action? It seems to be quite clear to me that the motivating element that causes a person to take any action, altruistic in this case, must be the pleasure he gains from executing that “altruistic” act. The reasons why I believe in this are mostly intuitive and are based on the fact that I fail to find a reason for a person to take any actions without foreseeing some sort of pleasure from taking this very action. Thus, the answer for our “Why” question at the end goes down to one of the three following reasons:
1) it gives him positive emotions 2) he has strong belief that it will eventually make him feel good, or maybe 3) it enables him to avoid some form of displeasure and dissatisfaction (which is, in fact, just one more way to say that it makes him feel pleased and the action he chooses to take will always be chosen just because it is really ,or he is sure it is, in his best interest….. and It can be easily demonstrate by real examples.
