Synth Module

Synth Module
How do I create a performance synth setup on my laptop, using a regular stage piano as the controller?

I want to run a program (I assume with VST plugins) on my laptop which would act as a synth module while performing. I would run a standard Yamaha stage piano through it to act as the controller.

I was also wondering if it would be possible to set up the laptop touchpad as a kind of pitch controller for vibrato and pitch bend effects.

I don't know much about this I'm afraid, so you'll have to bear with my untechnical language!

I would use Ableton Live as my DAW. Yes you will need VST plugins. Ableton Live is well known by performing artists. It's very flexible.

Ableton Live - http://www.performedmusic.com/search/label/S%20-%20Ableton%20Live
MIDI controller - http://www.performedmusic.com/search/label/E%20-%20M-Audio%20Axiom

What you will need is a MIDI to USB cable (like these ones - http://bit.ly/baQhkS )

I'm not so sure about the laptop touchpad acting as a kind of Kaossilator, I haven't seen it.

Hardware synth on a pci card?

Is there such a thing? I've searched and searched but all I find are recording cards. I'm talking about something like a nice Roland or Korg synth module on a card you can plug into a pci slot. Should be a simple thing but I can't seem to locate one.

A good Creative Soundblaster card is a synth module itself. The only major difference is that it is not possible to edit sounds, but the core of a Soundblaster (the good ones) is pretty much like an E-mu synth.

On the other hand, I strongly suggest you to try software synthesizers. Native Instruments' FM8 (a powerful version of the Yamaha DX-7) and Pro-53 are very good. If you like Korgs, try the Korg Digital Collection, with software versions of the M1 and Wavestation. I have the original keyboards, and its software version sounds far better.

  1. Everything about the idea of using Expert Sleepers Silent Way LFO software with external analog synth modules is awesome and so clever. I wish I’d thought of this, but instead will probably just pay (literally) for having not. So cool.
