COLOUR STAR CEILING KIT - DIY FIBRE OPTIC CEILING STARS
What function do the B and V filters have in determining the colour index of a star?
B (blue) and V (visual) photgraphic filters are used to determine the color index of a star by comparing the brightness of a star, taken through each filter separately, to a set standard of colour-magnitude scales which have been predetermined through observation and methematical analysis. Sometimes a star will look brighter through a blue filter than it will through the visual filter. What that means is that the star gives off more light in the blue part of the spectrum than it does in the visual, so the star is hot and bright. If the star gives a brightness value higher in the visual than in the blue, that means it's cooler and redder. Using a complete index of filters....UBV and I, you can determine what colour-magnitude the star will be and therefore it's temperature relative to all the other stars around it. An example of this is a star which gives off equal amounts of light in BV is classed as A and has a BV index of 0.3 to 0.0. A star who is brighter in the B filter than the others is classed B and has an index of between -0.1 to -2.0. A G class star, like the sun, has some red in it's spectrum in BV and has a value of between 0.6 to 0.7, because it's brighter in the V filter than the others. K class stars mostly lie between 0.75 to 0.89. M class stars are very red and many need an I (infrared) filter to determine their colour index.....they can range from 0.9 to 2.0 or more.
In the extreme upper end of the indices are the stars which are predominately brighter at U (UV) wavelengths. These are usually the very large and ultrabright O class stars with indices greater than -2.0.
