How difficult is it to get a job in a theatre without a degree?

I went to college for a degree in Theatre Education, and finished with way more credits than I needed in the theatre, but I still need quite a few gen ed classes for a degree. I am now past the age of going back and finishing. I want to work as an Asst. Stage Manager or Asst. Director. I ran probably about 7-8 shows while in school, and directed another 2-3. I also worked loading in/out off broadway shows about 2-3 times a year, and assisted in rigging and lighting. I am in a job that pays pretty well, but have slowly become disenchanted with my station in life ( I guess this is the mid life crisis? ) and I would really like to get back into something I love doing, even if it means taking a pay cut. Any suggestions or insight would be VERY much appreciated.

A college degree would help get your foot in the door, but it's definitely not a requirement. If you're looking for an ASM or an AD gig get your resume and reference sheet together and start sending them out. Here's a good place to start:

I also strongly recommend sending out cold resumes (unsolicited) to companies all over the country until you score an interview. Be ready to settle for crap at first until you get some more professional experience. One job usually leads to the next so it helps not to be too picky at first.

If your more interested in a crew position, your best bet is to contact the local union in your area and ask about getting on a call list. They'll provide you work. You can search for a local in your area using the link below.

Good luck!

Being one of the first TV-friendly venues in the nation, US Cellular Arena is Milwaukee's 12,700-seat home for sports, entertainment and assemblies since 1950. So, if you want to be where all the action is going to be taking place, then you better book your tickets now!

The US Cellular Arena opened in 1950 and had former names, such as, Milwaukee Arena from 1968 to 1974, MECCA Arena from 1974 to 1995, and Wisconsin Center Arena from 1995 to 2000. The facility had gained much fame as MECCA, being the home of champions and an audacious Pop Art basketball floor, and later, when it was renamed as US Cellular Arena in 2001, it continued on hosting the wide variety of top-notch events culturally rich, highly entertaining and visually stimulating to the surrounding population. It hosts 170-190 events per year which include concerts, family shows, conventions, corporate meetings, sporting events, rodeos, ice shows, circuses and high school events.

In 2000, ice-making ability was restored and bold new outdoor lighting, signage and electronic messaging systems were added. A new, outdoor, public promenade alongside the building - the Wisconsin Athletic Walk of Fame was also constructed and a new basketball floor was acquired in late 2001.

The building is technologically up-to-date and equipped for the needs of television and other electronic media. It has ample light for television and is equipped to support high volume power requirements, satellite links, and telephone and data transmission lines and it has an extraordinarily strong ceiling that can support the heaviest shows on the road and is "ready to rig" any conceivable arrangement of lights, speakers, banners, props or other equipment.
