Any suggestions for an audition song for a symphony chorus?

I am a musical theatre Lyric Baritone - usually play more contemporary twenty-something leads... (ie. Huck - Big River, Joseph - Joseph, Seymour - Little Shop) I don't ever sing classical music, but have an audition that I can select the music. I just need one song and it CAN be in English. I don't want a song that is typically done by singers with booming, rich baritone voices... Something lighter in nature would be great!! Thanks for all of your suggestions!!

You'll want an art song, not an aria, not a showtune.

Vaughn Williams has scads of them, they are slightly modal, highly 'tonal' and show you can get around a bit. The quick glance I gave you tube yielded mainly settings of folk tunes. Look further for one with a less old-fashioned melody.

Similarly, Benjamin Britten. Many to choose from, there is an arrangement of an Irish folk tune: "Down by the Salley gardens"

Charles Ives also wrote hundreds of songs. Here, "Two Little Flowers." Disarmingly simple sounding, it requires a longer line, and the line climbs throughout the song. It may not sound like a 'dislpay' piece, but this is the sort of thing auditioner's are totally aware of and appreciate. It demonstrates a number of qualities they hope to hear in an audition. It is brief:

Any audition for a major symphonic chorus (San Francisco Symphony, Cleveland, New York, Chicago, etc.) might have a song like any of the above, or similar, presented to you cold for the sight-singing part of the audition. You get about a minute to look it over, then you sing it with the staff accompanist playing.

best regards.

For nr 6, I think that she felt that she knows the play well enough and she practiced enough for that day. That's if I understood it right, hope you get it all in time.
