What should I use to add special FX to my own videos?
I have a lot of good ideas for videos that I would like to make. I want, no, need some visual and audio special effects for these videos. I've seen some pretty good videos by other people on the web that include animated muzzle flashes and explosions to lightsabers and lasers. I want this ability! What should I use and where can I get it? No cheapo free offer programs, though. I want quality at my disposal!
You'll have to be prepared to learn multiple pieces of professional software if you want good, believable results. Also, this isn't the kind of thing one can do in an afternoon. It took me and my crew about 250 hours of work to animate a nuclear bomb detonation over a city. That's seven seconds of video.
You'll need knowledge of a professional non linear video editor. I recommend final cut express. This is essentially the amateur version of what was used to edit 300, etc. You need to learn color casting, faking light sources, and masking/matting. Especially masking/matting.

You'll also need knowledge of 3d animation software. I recommend Houdini. It was used for the special effects in GI Joe, among others.

You could learn a dedicated special effects platform, like adobe after effects, but I find that these produce flat, lifeless results.

Laser Eye Treatment - A Revolution in Eye Correction
