How do I wire 4 50 watt lights together to plug into outlet?
I am trying to put together a lighting system for my sons reptile cage. I plan to put 4 50 watt lights in the system, but am not sure what size wire I need to plug into outlet without overheating the wire and starting a fire. I also plan to put a switch in the circuit.
obviously Greta f is wrong(not an electrical engineer or electrician). go to a lowes or home depot and they can cut you any awg or length SJOW or similar cord you need. the others are right, 16 awg, which is rated 18 amps or 10 amps per NEC 240.4(D)(2), is more than enough. 12-2 is rated 30 amps or 20 amps per NEC 240.4(D)(5) , so therefore it is OVERKILL.
12-2---30 amps 16-2---------18amps
(values are from NEC Table 310.16 for 90c conducters)(not used because of the small conducter rule, 240.4(D) but okay for cords)

what kind of studio lights to buy one softbox or 2 8oo watts strobe lights with umbrellas?
I am looking to buy some lights for portrait photography. I'm looking at a 60 x 30 inch softbox for a 400 watt Strobe light, or is it better to get 2 800 watt lights with 2 umbrellas. which one of the lights would be better to buy.
definitely the strobes. I'm not a fan of rectangular or square softboxes. I think octagonal look better in terms of catchlights. You can also do shoot thru umbrellas instead. It mimics an octagonal softbox but instead of $100 its about 15. I have 2 400 w/s Britek strobes that I use as a set and one pair of 300w/s SP Systems strobes as well. The britek kit has an octagonal softbox. I use the softbox as my key light and a reflective umbrella as a fill. The SP strobes I use a shoot thru umbrella and a reflective umbrella or a beauty dish that I made and a reflective umbrella. The beauty dish is way powerful, so that strobe is turned down to 1/4 power or less. Its been working for me pretty well. Definitely have better results with the strobes. I used to use constant lighting... I don't see myself going back to it very often.
